Nail Art Designs - Old and New!

Hiya guys!  Happy last day of November!!  Hope you've all had a great week and are looking forward to the Christmas festivities!  I know I can’t wait to get a wee peppermint mocha and walk around Glasgow all wrapped up and cosy.

This week my post is about nails again – a couple of nail art designs I have completed.  More of a picture post, but I will do two tutorials near the end of the post on the designs I have come up with.

I have done the designs on false nails as I’ve had no time to sit down and try them out on my own nails.  However, I’m still going to use them - I’m actually wearing the triangle mosaic design just now and I love it J

Anyway, here are the nail designs...

I have always just used nail polish for the arty details.

The tools I normally use are:

-        Dotting tools – These are actually embossing tools but they were on sale in an art shop! I thought ‘why not try them as nail dotting tools?’  So I did, and I have used them ever since.  They are quite easy to use for nail designs.

(If you don’t want to spend a lot on nail art tools you can always
use cocktail sticks, old ball-point pens or Kirby grips as dotting tools.
These are what I used when I started my nail art hobby.)

-        Paintbrushes - I bought two different-sized brushes - again from an art shop.  One is a size 10/0, the smallest, which is good for small details and fine lines.  The other is a size 0, which I cut to make a striper brush for long thin lines.

So, using these tools I created two nail designs this week, a triangle mosaic design and my favourite leopard/cheetah print design.  Below, I have explained the steps I took to create the nails.

Triangle Mosaic Nails

Steps:

1)     After shaping the nails to fit my own nails I put on one coat of very light blue/grey polish as the base.

2)     I picked six different colours: metallic dark grey, lilac, orangey red, light blue/green, teal and baby pink.  These were the colours I wanted for the triangles, but you can pick any colour you like.  You can also just use one colour for the triangles, if you prefer.

3)     I used the small 10/0 brush to paint the triangles in different sizes and shapes.

4)     After the triangles were dry, I put one coat of a translucent sparkly white glitter on top. Originally I wasn’t going to do this, but the nails were looking a little flat.  So I thought if I used this polish this would give them an edgier look.

5)      Lastly, a final coat of clear nail polish sealed everything in!

Leopard/Cheetah Print Nails

Steps:

1)     I applied two coats of black nail polish.  One coat was too translucent and I wanted it more opaque.

2)     I chose to use gold nail polish for the detail as I quite like the contrast between the two colours - the gold is a bit glittery and it works well against the shiny black.

3)     I then painted the leopard/cheetah spots on with the 10/0 brush.

(Here is a step-by-step photo of how to do the leopard/cheetah print.  It is really easy to do, and it doesn’t have to be super neat either – it is much better if it isn’t too neat anyway as it gives it more character!)

4)     Once all the spots were dry, I put a coat of clear nail polish on top and…voila! Finished!

So that’s basically it!

Hopefully these little tutorials helped!  They are honestly quite easy to do, so have a go at it and see what you come up with! J

Well, that’s my post for this week.  I’m looking forward to my upcoming posts in December - I’m going to try and keep to a Christmas theme…and am hoping they will inspire some of you out there!

Okay guys, thanks for reading!  I really do appreciate it!

Have a good week and I’ll catch you next week!  Until then…see ya!

Crocheting: my first attempt!

Hiya guys!  How are you all doing?  I hope you've all had a great week!

I’ve been busy working away, but when I had spare time I was making something to blog about this week. A crocheted scarf!

Not that long ago I decided I really wanted to learn how to crochet.  Ever since I was wee, my mum has always crocheted loads of blankets and I was always fascinated by how fast she would use the hook to wind the wool into itself and create something.  I remember watching her and wondering how it was done!

My mum learned how to crochet by watching her older cousin doing it when she was young.  She just learned the basics of crocheting and from there went on to make the designs that she used!  Basically just winging it, seeing what worked and what didn’t.

The blankets are massive so I couldn’t take a full photo of them, so I just took close ups of the designs. They must have actually taken months and months to make!  Woah!

She starts a blanket by making little patches and joining them up as she goes.  Here is a photo of one of the wee patches.

I tried to copy how my mum does this, but to be honest, I couldn’t do it!  It was really difficult.  So I thought I would see if I could find a YouTube tutorial for beginners.  Something fairly easy that I could start off with - the link to the tutorial is at the end of this post.

So on Monday this week, when out shopping in town with my sister, I saw this lovely Sirdar cotton dk yarn in Darling Bud and I had to get it.  I can’t really work with wool too often as it irritates my skin (as I’m allergic to dust mites and have eczema L) so I thought I would try using this 100% cotton yarn to see if maybe it would be okay with my skin.  So far, it is better than using wool yarn!  I’ll see how this goes!

Anyway, I used a US H8/5.00mm crochet hook to make my scarf with this yarn.

Here is the progress I made this week.

Since I wasn’t sure about how the yarn would work with my skin, I only bought one ball.  However since it was only a 100g ball and 232 yards in length, I ran out so my scarf isn’t totally finished…yet.  I will definitely buy more yarn, maybe two more balls, so I can make the scarf wider so it can be used when it gets colder!  Hopefully I can get it all finished before the start of December.

Pastel colours don’t really suit me so I said to my sister that this can be hers when it’s all finished!

I think I did pretty well…for a beginner!  I do quite enjoy crocheting, so I might keep at it.  Also, just to mention, I also tried my hand at knitting earlier this year and made an arm-knitted infinity scarf and a blanket too.  I don’t have a clear image of the blanket but you can get an idea of what I did.

This was when I found out that wool affected my skin, so I now try to keep clear of it so that my hands will be happy!

So that’s basically it for this week’s post guys.  I would say if you like trying new crafty things, give crocheting a go!  It very cool once you’ve actually made something.  I am actually quite proud of myself for managing to crochet something!  Hopefully I can try out different designs and end up making loads of blankets like my mama!  J  We’ll see!

Well, I’ll catch you all next week with my usual Sunday post!  Thanks for reading guys!!

Until next time…see ya!

Bathroom Redecoration Project: Part One!!

Hiya guys!  How are you all doing?  Hope you've all had a great week!

So, if you can remember, a few weeks ago I did a post giving you tips to help decorate a room.  Well, this week I thought I would sort of expand on that and actually focus on a room in my house!

Well, not that long ago my dad decided that the bathroom had to be redone as it had been a while since it has been done up - I can't actually remember when!  Anyway, to be honest we (my family and I) aren't ones to redecorate every year or two.  We prefer to have something done that is going to last a while until it definitely needs to be done again!

I have to say before I properly get into this post that this will just be the first stage of the bathroom redecoration project!  With Christmas coming up, and with work commitments and everything, this project will take a wee while to complete, but hopefully it will be all finished in the first half of 2015!

For the moment, this post will show you what I have done for the first part of the project - the research stage.

Well, so far what has happened is...the wallpaper has been taken off the walls revealing painted plaster.

As you can see, there are quite a few cracks and holes in the wall from removing the paper.  What was under the paper though is quite a nice green colour...and quite a few scribbles that my sister and I did when we were younger!

This is all that has been done for the moment.  My dad did ask about decorating the room - with how to fix the walls before painting etc.  This was a while back though and I didn't really know what to do if I'm being really honest.  I did a bit of research about it and I thought this would be a good project to do since starting up my blog!  This way I can post updates on how it is coming along!

And so, to start this project, I spoke to the family to see what we all wanted the bathroom to look like, to get an idea about colour schemes etc.

I then made a colour/mood board!

If you don't know what a mood board is you can have a look at my earlier post 'Stuck on how you want to decorate a room? Here's a wee design tip that can help you get your ideas together!'

A mood board will help us see what kind of colours, textures we could use in the room.

Basically, to start with I picked images from magazines and from Pinterest and stuck them down on to the card.

You don't have to use magazines or websites that are specifically for interior decoration.  You can get inspiration from anywhere and anything - from the design of a perfume bottle to the colours from a video game cover and the look of certain fabric - anything!

This is the mood board I created with the project brief that the family came up with.

So far they think this is good, and we are finally getting on our way to starting this project.  Of course I will keep you all informed on how it is all going.  I'll most likely be tweeting about the progress of the project - you know, the things that are too small for a blog post.  Therefore if you haven't followed me yet...the link to my social media pages are on the right of the page.  So all you lovely people, please add, like, follow me...it would be much appreciated! :)

Without taking up any more of your time this with this post - I realise it has been more like an essay - I will say cheerio for now!

Oh, before I forget, if any of you have any tips for filling cracks and holes in bathroom walls and what to use etc. please leave me a wee comment, either in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter!  That would actually be fab!!  It would be good to hear from people who have done this before.

Okay, okay...that's me!  Have a good week and I'll speak to you all next Sunday!  Until then...see ya!

What you can do with leftover loom bands!

Hiya guys!  Happy Sunday to you all, hope you’ve had a great week and have enjoyed the beautiful firework displays!

I’ve just been working away as usual.  On one of my days off this week I decided to clean out and arrange my craft boxes and I found a box of loom bands.  Remember them?  They were quite the craze in the summer!  You don’t see them as much now as you did in the first half of this year, do you?  I kind of went through a wee phase of making loads of them, a little bit embarrassing I know.  I’m probably a wee bit old for the loom band craze but I just really like making things so this ‘loom band thing’ appealed to my creative side.

As usual I went overboard and bought loads of rubber bands.  Now I don’t know what to do with them all. So this week I’ve decided to do a post about what to do with the leftover loom bands!

As well making lots of bracelets months ago, I also made a little pineapple pencil topper.  Why?  I love pineapples, like a lot.  Everything pineapple!  I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to pineapples.  Wee bit sad, but I don’t care!  Anyway, I thought I could use leftover bands to create pencil grips, pencil toppers and small charms too.  You can use them yourself or give them as presents.  Since its coming up to Christmas, it could be an idea for a stocking filler!

So, for this post, I’m not going to show the steps involved to make these creations because I had to look up YouTube videos on how to do them.  They are not difficult to make, just a bit tricky!  (The links to the YouTube videos I looked at for these designs are shown at the end of the post!)  The loom I used was the Monster Tail loom, and I used the hook that came with the set.

Well, that’s all for this week’s post guys.  Hopefully, like me, you have gotten a bit of inspiration for what to do with leftover loom bands!  You should have a go at these designs, because you can end up with some cool things!

I’ll catch you next Sunday with my next post!  Until next time…see ya!
